How is Menopause Diagnosed?

Your medical history, symptoms, and a simple hormone test measuring  follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) are usually all that is needed by your health care provider to diagnose if you are in menopause.

Natural menopause on the average occurs to women about age 51, but can happen for some women much earlier. Premature ovarian failure (POF) (sometimes called temporary menopause) and early menopause before age 40 is rare, but it does occur. The average age for POF is 27 years old.  Menopause can be induced at any age if the ovaries are removed or damaged as in hysterectomy surgery, and tubal ligation surgery, or chemotherapy.

The most noted hormonal change that occurs during menopause is a severe decrease in estrogen. Estrogen loss puts you at risk for serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis.   While these health conditions may not manifest until years later, the immediate symptoms (hot flashes, etc...) of the hormonal changes occurring often appear before your last menstrual cycle. This period of the menopause transition is often called perimenopause.  A woman may have none, one, some, or many of the symptoms listed.   The symptoms can be very unpredictable and disturbing if a woman does not know they are related to menopause.

While a woman who is 55 may have 7 or 8 different symptoms, this may not be surprising to her or her doctor.  On the other hand, a woman who is 29 years old experiencing 10 or so symptoms, including hot flashes and loss of sex drive would be.

A woman is "postmenopausal" when she has not had a menstrual period for one year.  The term "menopause"  is used to describe the period between the beginning and end of symptoms and is often used to include the perimenopausal and postmenopausal periods.
